diary of a broken thumb

i’ve had my fair share of accidents, medical emergencies and surgeries and no adventure of mine has been without incident ….so a broken thumb in week 3 of arriving in tulum came as no big surprise … but holy fucking OUCHIE

yep that hurts

while wiping down the table and chairs at the café…the table top to the massive picnic table slipped off and fell on to my hand which was busy cleaning the bench…..and before i could get my hand out of the way it was squashed between the 2 pieces of wood…. the table top being made of 3 pieces of wood which are NOT attached to the frame, i assume because it would be near impossible to move the table without the use of a forklift ..that…or…nails are hard to come by in Mexico?

funny thing is..just the day before the accident….I was saying..”I don’t like this table its dangerous” (the universe loves when I talk out loud and all but dare it to answer me)

i was certain it was not broken, but after a trip to the local clinic and a shot to freeze my thumb so they could manipulate it…dr. damien informs me that it was most likely broken and it being a thumb he recommended an x-ray to ensure that it was a clean break and not in pieces…that being the case I’d need surgery to set it..wonderful news

smiling because i cannot feel anything below my elbow

An x-ray in tulum would cost me a small fortune, and my health insurance ran out 4 days prior

..another karmic joke..

bandaged, numbed and sweating…. I  headed to Playa del Carmen where I could get a fairly cheap x-ray at the red cross…forever the discount shopper i am…dad would be so proud

thankfully my bubbles skull was not involved 🙂

$400 peso  x-ray of a small clean break on the first knuckle

“out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scars”

Kahlil Gibran

back to tulum with xray in-hand to see dr. d again -> now he tells me i may want to see a specialist “just” to be sure…” you wouldn’t want it to heal poorly, it being a thumb and all!”…..a very important digit to us more advanced primates

so silly kitty here takes the dire warning as truth and makes the trip back to playa the next morning to see an orthotic specialist…who calls in 3 more medical staff (?) To have a look at the crazy tattooed white monkey…..he tells me “yep its broken and puts on a brace that i should wear for 4 weeks

->brace $200 pesos<-

…..and says i should fill the three prescriptions ……one being for antibiotic crème…so you know i didn’t bother…… and i’m in and out in less than an hour -> $500+ pesos <-but not before telling me i should come back in 4 weeks for another x-ray and will also need physio… i started to feel like a bank machine

ok….not crazy expensive true but with my Scottish blood any price was making my arms shrink and my pockets deeper…..i could have just splinted the damn thing myself and walked into any farmica and asked for  oxycontin  aka “hill-billy heroin” which is readily available here…but then i won’t have the souvenir of my right hand x ray….i’ve got a collection and hope to one day be able to build a portrait of my full body in x-rays

healing up nicely..have lost the brace and now using my thumb simply because it is damn near impossible not to….arnica has helped but my thumb still looks like my big toe…ewwwwwwwwww

Caguama Tortuga sighting

my Mexican horoscope said today was a day of change for the positive not only in my economical situation but mental state

-> later in the day I was informed that the local fiscales (something akin to tax police but not exactly officially police…and a tad more corrupt but an excepted aspect of running a business in mexico) are closing down the guesthouse and café for non payment…meaning I am now jobless

Sorta  in direct opposition to the stars..ummmmm

but just like in my first weeks here… when doubting my desicion to come to tulum….the call came @12.45am “ A TORTUGA” had just found her spot to nest on the beach directly across from the guesthouse….so off I dashed with camera in hand to watch this prehistoric creature that lives by  following the oceans currents….only to swim around the world year after year to come back here each summer to leave her brood

weighing in around 280-300 pounds

So majestic and ancient looking and to think of the miles each one  travels and the great deal of effort to fight to get to shore in these strong currents of late…let alone  the 20 minutes or more to find the right spot on the beach, then to lay her eggs and carefully cover her nest  by digging herself into a hole, that at times the turtle is too tired to get out of……….I am awestruck by these  magnificent beauties of the sea

takes my breath away

As she headed back out to sea tears came to my eyes… so exhausted by her efforts ..the process took about 2 hours …. but she managed to lay and cover all 144 of her eggs…again it makes me smile…I’d run too…in her case slowly paddle herself back to sea…who could bare to raise 144 lil creatures.

caguama tortuga

We humans moan and bitch a lot…about any and most everything…

My horoscope was correct…my economical situation changed…unemployed and living in mexico…but somehow dosen’t seem so bad at the moment…unfazed and a tad relieved… as it means I will now have the freedom to do what I wish with no responsibility to be up at 6:00am for work, which has been one of the hardest lessons -in tolerance of bullshit and acceptance  and that all will sort itself out in due time-I have had to deal with in many years.

now i have time to write

side tracked

with a plan to move to vancity may 1 already underway…….i was busy during the winter months down sizing my belongings and life. I sold or gave away most of what I did not need

…have you ever really looked at what you have and how much of it you do not need?  Its surprising how we get sucked into the system of consuming for consumption sake….we must keep the economy going right? i realize now that iwas a beginner “hoarder” and would soon be up to my eyeballs in “stuff” and am thankful for whatever it was that made me decide to move and thus downsize….

After a glorious trip in February to the Mayan Riviera, for a dear friends’ wedding

…I got to thinking…..why not MEXICO instead of Vancouver?

->careful what you say to the universe  tho…. as it may just come true <-

when I returned home to resume my shedding of belongings and planning my drive west I started communication with some folks that lead me to the possibility of living and working in mexico for 6 months or there abouts….and then days before my big send off/birthday/art show extravaganza I got the call from Tulum….and within 4 days I made one of the biggest decisions of my life….without my usual surveying of friends for their opinions I said “why not”…and Vancouver got side tracked by Mexico.

Sitting here today…one month and 2 days after arriving in Mexico I’m tanned, still dazed and slightly confused by where I am and what I’ve seen and been through. It has not been easy…not that life ever is…yet with all the bad …and hells yes there has been bad…. Seems the map  always changes but the path is pretty much the same…loads of bends, dips and potholes but once you drive it a few times you learn when to turn the wheel

I still envision myself here a few months down the road….doing what? that is still up in the air…. and that is okay with me.

I came to start a new chapter of life, one with less stress, less stuff.. a life filled more with experiences and sights than with material crap and the bullshit we seems to fill our plates with at the buffet. i’m seeking something…and maybe soon i’ll start down the path of being more tranquillo

i’ve seen an old turtle waddle up the beach and lay 107 eggs (can you imagine 107 children …eek  no thanks

i live without electricity most days                                                                                                 i’m still eating Mexican avocados…..just now they don’t need to travel as far to get into my belly (:                                                                                                                                          i’ve rode my bike into one of the largest natural land reserves in the americas and sat on  a beach with no other human in sight

enjoy the no ppl zone

the blue crabs are so plentiful and brave

moon gazing

that I’ve had one crawl right up my skirt on the beach while gazing at the moon…

brave or pervy crabs

With the rainy season well under way…. some activities will have to wait

red boots and maple leaf 4ever

what’s the rush?

i’m not going anywhere in a hurry these days.
